Norwich City Under-9s travelled to Holland over the weekend May 22nd to May 24th and competed in two one-day tournaments.
Saturday saw them make the short trip from their base near Venlo across the German border to the home ground of 1FC Viersen.
Here they faced a tough looking competition with a total of 28 teams from Germany and further afield taking part. Going into their group, City discovered that TuS Koblenz, from Norwich’s twin City in Germany, had failed to turn-up. Nevertheless five group games needed to be played as the Canaries strived to reach the last sixteen.
Norwich opened up with a 2-1 win against Wattenscheid 09 before losing out 1-0 to Belgium club Lokeren. They recovered to beat East German club Hallescher FC 3-0, only to lose out 3-1 to VV Venlo and then finally draw with our friends from FC Hennef 1-1.
All this was enough to put Norwich through to the last 16 where they came up against formidable opponents in the form of Italian giants AC Milan. City put in their best performance of the day and held their own for much of game before narrowly losing out 1-0.
Two further wins and then a defeat at the hands of Everton saw Norwich finish 10th overall after the placement games. After a long day in which they had performed well, it was off to get some rest with another big tournament to follow the next day in Venlo ….
