Over the weekend of 16th – 17th May Norwich City Under-12s attended the International Tournament at Mörfelden, near Frankfurt in Germany.
The tournament had a very large 60 team field and the first task on Saturday was to try to qualify for the finals on Sunday by coming first or second in a five-team group.
First opponents of the day were Bergisch Born, a local German side from near Wuppertal. City dominated the game only to go behind when Born scored from their only attack. City did score an equaliser but made life in the group stage difficult by more making the most of their control of the game as the match ended 1-1.
Next up were Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, favourites for the group. The Canaries played a lot better than in their first game and gave Werder a good game. However Bremen proved to be just a little too strong, running out 2:1 victors.
The games were coming thick and fast, next up were local side RW Walldorf, a neighbouring club in Mörfelden. In this game Norwich showed they had learnt from their mistakes in the first game and ran out 5:0 winners in a game that was as one-sided as the result suggests.
Last up in the group games were Kecskemet of Hungary. Other results meant that a draw would more than likely be enough to qualify in second place in the group. Unfortunately a defensive slip allowed the Hungarians to take a 1:0 lead and despite continually pushing forward Norwich found no way through to get an equaliser and ended up third in the group.
This left Norwich to play for places 21 – 36 in the 60 team tournament on the Sunday. City did well here and 3 wins, a draw and a loss saw them finish in 23rd place overall by the end of the weekend.
Overall, a great weekend for the players to learn from playing foreign opposition in a very competitive environment and experiencing another country.
