For the second year in succession and the third time in total, Norwich City Academy sent an Under-13 squad to this weekends Euro-Cup indoor tournament staged by local club Viktoria Heiden near Dortmund in Germany. The tournament includes many Bundesliga sides and Norwich had to deal with some of the best of them in their group games on Saturday with Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg, Alemannia Aachen and Arminia Bielefeld joining host club Heiden in the Canaries group.
City used their first game against Aachen to get used to the surface and indoor game, narrowly losing 2-1 in a game they may well have won later in the afternoon. A clear defeat against Leverkusen was followed by a convincing 9-1 victory against Heiden. A 3-0 defeat against Wolfsburg followed, before the young Canaries put in a good display against title holders Bielefeld before losing 4-2.
Fifth place in the group sees Norwich playing for places 17 to 20 in the competition on Sunday morning in games against Gornik Zabrze (Poland), Simeon Jackson's club Eintracht Braunschweig and SC Paderborn.
Academy Manager Ricky Martin led the Norwich travelling party on the trip and stressed the positive learning effect for the boys in a different form of the game against continental opposition.
