With the first leg of the FA Youth Cup Final only two days away, it was more or less an Under-16 side which represented Norwich in this Under-18 Academy League match. Ex-Norwich Manager Bryan Gunn was in attendance, but his son, Angus, only had a place on the bench for the visitors. With Ian Butterworth and Peter Grant (his son was playing for Norwich) also watching, it was quite a managers reunion on this chilly morning at Colney.
Norwich, despite their young years, tried to make a game of it, and got forward at every opportunity. But indecision in the Norwich defence saw Manchester score four goals without reply in the first-half.
Colney regulars fearing a repeat of the 7-0 defeat to Middleborough under similar circumstances needn’t have been worried though. The second-half saw Norwich get forward much more and create several more chances. Lewis Hewitt-Coleman scored for the Canaries with a shot from outside the area and further chances followed to reduce the margin of defeat.
For Norwich, Michee Efete impressed at left back while Robbie Sweeney made some good runs from midfield and Jake Simpson led the line well. All in all it was a decent outing for the Under-16s.
City Line-up: Oxborough, Hawkins, Efete, Grant, Fox, Fletcher, Longman, Fountain, Simpson, Hewitt-Coleman, Sweeney.
Subs (all used): Couzens, Lincoln, Cole.
