First year scholar Sam Kelly capped a man of the match performance with a superb goal as Ricky Martin's third placed Canaries saw off fourth placed West Ham with the only goal of a highly entertaining game at Colney yesterday.

Playing against his old club Jack Werndly was quickly into the thick of the action firing into the side netting after some good approach play from Richard Brindley.

City were giving a trial to Wroxham striker Claudio Langlois, who rose above the Hammers defence to send a glancing header over the bar. Moments later the visitors bench was on its feet when referee Mr Block turned away what looked like a good penalty shout after schoolboy Harry Barker appeared to upend his man.

Kelly was instrumental in setting up Ryan Oakley who blasted his effort over the bar, while Kelly was guilty of giving the ball away in a dangerous position but he made amends by winning the ball back.

Oakley brought a good save from Sam Cowler, but on 43 minutes City opened the scoring. Kelly again turned provider for Oakley who was again denied by Cowler but the ball was worked out to Kelly who from the corner of the penalty area lifted the ball over Cowler to find the net, the ball going in off the post.

Matthew Ball saw a free kick blocked shortly into the second half and when Werndly fired in the loose ball Cowler was on hand to make the save.

Werndly then won a penalty for Norwich after he was upended but from the spot Cowler dive away to his right to save Ball's spot kick.

Paul McCallum fired into the side netting as West Ham looked to draw level, but it was City who almost added to the scoring with Werndly and Brindley both going close in the final minutes.
