YOUNG SIDE LOSES TO THE BLUES

NORWICH CITY UNDER 18's 1 CHELSEA UNDER 18's 4

City's Academy Under-18 side equalled their heaviest defeat of the season on Saturday when they went down 4-1 to Chelsea at Colney.

Whilst the performance was less than satisfactory, it must be pointed out that David Williams named a side that contained three schoolboys in the starting line up.

City started the game brightly enough and should have opened the scoring after just eight minutes when they were awarded a penalty for pushing.

Lee Blackburn took the spot kick but James Russell was equal to it and saved well down to his left.

Nevertheless Norwich continued to look the better side and they did find the net on 14 minutes when Chris Martin raced onto a through ball to side-foot the ball past Russell.

Chelsea hit crossbar

Chelsea slowly got their game together and they pulled level on 25 minutes when the ball was pulled back from the by-line for Michele Gallaccio to tap in from close range.

City might have regained the upper hand shortly after when Robert Eagle sliced his way through the blues defence to cross the ball for Martin whose clever back heel to Blackburn saw the City midfield fire in a shot that was cleared off the line.

With just eight minutes to go before the break Chelsea took the lead when Shane Herbert was beaten with a curling 30 yard free kick from Ben Hudell.

City could have still been in with a shout with a 2-1 scoreline at the interval, but Chelsea had different ideas when they extended their lead in first-half stoppage time when Philip Younghusband found the net with a low drive.
On the hour mark schoolboys Martin and Michael Spillane combined, only for Spillane to see his header loop over the bar.

Just three minutes later Chelsea made sure of the points when Younghusband scored his second and Chelsea's fourth when he lifted the ball over an advancing Herbert.

Chelsea might have had a fifth when Hudell hit the woodwork, while deep in injury time Nicky Howell saw his first time volley also strike the crossbar for what would have only been a consolation goal.
